Anykščiai works best when the accommodation matches the nature-first reason for visiting: town-centre ease for a short trip, or a sodyba if you want sauna, forest and lake time.

Best for: Best for treetop-path weekends, families, cyclists and quiet rural stays.

Best area for a first visit

For a first visit, start with the compact centre around A. Baranausko Square and the church. It keeps restaurants, small shops and the main evening walk close together. It keeps you close to the Treetop Walking Path, the narrow-gauge railway, Puntukas Stone and the church tower, so one or two nights feel much easier than they would from the edge of town.

Best value area

apartments and guesthouses a few streets out from the centre usually gives better value. The town is small, so moving slightly away from the square rarely adds much travel time. Choose this if you want a larger room, easier parking or a quieter night without losing the main reason you came to Anykščiai.

Quiet stays and slower weekends

lakeside and forest sodybos around Rubikiai and the Šventoji river suits slower stays. This is the right choice for sauna, lake swimming and a slower weekend rather than a town break. Check distances before booking, because the most atmospheric stays can be awkward without a car.

Hotels, apartments and guesthouses

Most visitors should compare small hotels, apartments, guesthouses and rural sodybos. Apartments work well for families because restaurant choice is limited outside the centre. If you are driving, filter for parking before you filter for breakfast; it saves more stress than it sounds.

Getting around from your accommodation

Most visitors arrive by car; buses work from Vilnius or Panevėžys but are less flexible for the forest sights. Parking is usually simple, but confirm it for central apartments during summer weekends. If your stay is short, pay more attention to location than star rating. A simple room in the right place usually beats a better room that needs taxis.

When to book ahead

Book ahead for July and August weekends, autumn foliage weekends and local festival dates. Lake and sauna properties disappear first, especially when the weather forecast looks good. For ordinary weekdays, booking a few weeks ahead is usually enough, but the best small properties can disappear before prices look obviously high.

Quick choice

Choose the compact centre around A. Baranausko Square and the church for a first trip, apartments and guesthouses a few streets out from the centre for value, and lakeside and forest sodybos around Rubikiai and the Šventoji river for a calmer stay. If prices look high, widen the search to the Anykščiai countryside if you have a car.
