Kaunas rewards a walkable base. Old Town and Laisvės alėja suit first-time visitors, while Naujamiestis is often the smarter pick for drivers, concerts and better value.
Best for: Best for architecture walks, Old Town weekends, arena events and practical city breaks.
Best area for a first visit
For a first visit, start with Old Town and the Laisvės alėja corridor. It puts the Old Town, cafés, bars and the modernist route into one walkable line. It keeps you close to Kaunas Castle, the Town Hall, Laisvės alėja, the modernist architecture trail and Žalgiris Arena, so one or two nights feel much easier than they would from the edge of town.
Best value area
Naujamiestis east of Laisvės alėja and the streets toward the railway station usually gives better value. The area has larger business-style hotels and apartments, often at softer weekday prices. Choose this if you want a larger room, easier parking or a quieter night without losing the main reason you came to Kaunas.
Quiet stays and slower weekends
Žaliakalnis, the river edges and the Pažaislis side of the city suits slower stays. It suits repeat visitors, drivers and anyone pairing Kaunas with Pažaislis Monastery or the reservoir. Check distances before booking, because the most atmospheric stays can be awkward without a car.
Hotels, apartments and guesthouses
Most visitors should compare four-star city hotels, serviced apartments, boutique Old Town hotels and budget guesthouses. Apartments are especially useful for longer stays because Kaunas rewards slow neighbourhood walking. If you are driving, filter for parking before you filter for breakfast; it saves more stress than it sounds.
Getting around from your accommodation
Kaunas is easy by train or bus from Vilnius; taxis and buses cover the station-to-centre gap quickly. Old Town parking is limited, so drivers should filter for parking or choose Naujamiestis. If your stay is short, pay more attention to location than star rating. A simple room in the right place usually beats a better room that needs taxis.
When to book ahead
Book ahead for Žalgiris games, major arena concerts, summer weekends and university graduation periods. Prices can spike sharply on arena nights even when the rest of the city looks quiet. For ordinary weekdays, booking a few weeks ahead is usually enough, but the best small properties can disappear before prices look obviously high.
Quick choice
Choose Old Town and the Laisvės alėja corridor for a first trip, Naujamiestis east of Laisvės alėja and the streets toward the railway station for value, and Žaliakalnis, the river edges and the Pažaislis side of the city for a calmer stay. If prices look high, widen the search to central Naujamiestis if Old Town prices jump.
