Klaipėda works best as a 1-to-2-night base for the Baltic coast or as the gateway to the Curonian Spit. Stay near the Old Town for atmosphere and walkable sights, or near the ferry terminal for fast Spit access. Allow a full day for the Old Town and Smiltynė, plus at least one day for the Spit (Nida, Parnidis dune, Hill of Witches). Direct trains from Vilnius take about 4 hours, buses 4.5 hours, flights to Palanga (PLQ) plus 30 km transfer.
Twelve experiences in and around Klaipėda
The Old Town is compact, walkable, and visually different from Vilnius: red-brick warehouses, half-timbered fronts, Lutheran churches. The list below runs roughly in the order you would walk them.
Walk Theatre Square and the Old Town
Theatre Square (Teatro aikštė) is where city life happens, fronted by the Drama Theatre and the Taravos Anikė statue (a 1912 monument to a poet's lover, and the city's most photographed bronze). From there, walk south through the Old Town: half-timbered houses, the Friedrich Quarter, brick warehouses converted into restaurants. The whole circuit takes 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Open the Mažoji Lietuva region pageVisit Klaipėda Castle Museum
The original 13th-century Teutonic-built fortress is mostly gone, but the surviving bastion houses an excellent castle museum tracing the city's German-Hanseatic past from Memel to Klaipėda. Underground vaults, period maps, and a small archaeology collection. Allow 1.5 hours.
See the 7-day Lithuania routeCoffee crawl down H. Manto
Herkaus Manto is the long pedestrian boulevard running north from the Old Town. Lined with cafes, small bookshops, and the city's best independent roasters (try Black Drop or Stikliū kava). Locals treat it the way Vilnius treats Pilies: the place to walk when you have nowhere to be.
Read the Vilnius food guideCross to Smiltynė and the beach
A 5-minute ferry from the Old Town terminal takes you to Smiltynė, the northernmost tip of the Curonian Spit. Sandy beach, pine forest, and the Lithuania Sea Museum. The ferry runs every 30 minutes year-round, costs €1.50 each way, and is part of normal city transport. The walk from the ferry to the beach takes 10 minutes through the woods.
Browse Klaipėda toursLithuania Sea Museum
Set inside a 19th-century coastal fortress on Smiltynė. Aquarium with Baltic and tropical species, dolphin exhibits, and a heritage exhibition on Lithuanian seafaring. Family-friendly, allow 2-3 hours. Closed Mondays in low season; open daily June to August.
Read the safety guideDay trip to the Curonian Spit
The single best day trip from Klaipėda. Take the ferry to Smiltynė, then a 50 km bus or rental car ride down the Spit through pine forest and dune villages to Nida. Climb Parnidis Dune for the view across the Russian border, eat smoked fish at the harbour, and return by late afternoon. Buy the bus ticket at the Smiltynė terminal.
Open the Curonian Spit guideWalk the Sculpture Park
A leafy 11-hectare park on the eastern edge of the Old Town, dotted with 116 outdoor sculptures by Lithuanian artists. Free, open year-round, 30-minute walk through. Built on the site of the former town cemetery, which is why some old gravestones survive among the modern art.
Open the culture pageBlacksmith Museum
A small but charming museum dedicated to Klaipėda's metalwork tradition. Forged crosses, old wrought-iron grilles, demonstrations on weekends. Located in a converted smithy on the edge of the Old Town. €5, 1 hour.
Open the Žemaitija pageEat smoked fish at the harbour
The Smiltynė ferry-side stalls and the Old Town fish markets sell smoked Baltic herring, eel, and flounder. Try Senoji Hansa for sit-down fish dishes, or grab a hot smoked fillet from a paper wrapper at the harbour. In summer, kibinai stalls also appear (a Karaim pastry typical of nearby Trakai).
Open the cuisine pageDrive to Karklė or Olando Kepurė
20 minutes north of the Old Town are the wilder mainland beaches. Karklė is a quiet pine-backed sand beach popular with locals. Olando Kepurė ("Dutchman's Cap") is a coastal cliff with a marked path. Both are calmer alternatives to Palanga in July and August.
See the Palanga pageOld Mill and Memel quarter
The Old Mill (Senasis Malūnas) area at the edge of the Old Town has been redeveloped into a riverside hotel and restaurant cluster, preserving the brick architecture of the former merchant Memel. The waterfront walk along the Danė river is one of the city's nicest evening strolls.
See the campervan routes pageSea Festival in late July
Klaipėda Sea Festival is the city's biggest annual event: tall ships in the harbour, concerts on Theatre Square, fireworks on Saturday evening. Late July, dates change yearly. Book accommodation 2 to 3 months ahead if you want to attend.

Best time to visit Klaipėda
Late May to mid-September is the sweet spot for the Spit ferry, beach access, and outdoor cafes. July is the peak (Sea Festival, school holidays, accommodation 30% pricier). June and early September are ideal: warm enough to swim, far less crowded. The Old Town is enjoyable year-round but the beach and Spit options shrink sharply October to April. Avoid mid-November and February (grey, wet, very limited daylight).
What it costs (per person, per day)
Backpacker: €40-55 (hostel, supermarket meals, walking and ferry only). Mid-range: €75-110 (3-star hotel near the Old Town, 1-2 restaurant meals, museum entries, day-trip bus to Nida). Comfortable: €140-220 (4-star Old Town hotel, smoked-fish dinners, guided Spit tour, taxis). Klaipėda is roughly the same price as Kaunas, so 15 to 20% cheaper than Vilnius.
How to get to Klaipėda
From Vilnius: train 4 hours direct (most comfortable, twice daily on ltglink.lt), bus 4 hours 30 minutes (Lux Express, Ecolines, more frequent). From Kaunas: train 2 hours 45 minutes, bus similar. By air: Palanga Airport (PLQ) is 30 km north, served by Ryanair from London, Copenhagen, Riga, and Frankfurt-Hahn, plus a year-round bus connection to Klaipėda Old Town. The Old Town is fully walkable; the Smiltynė ferry replaces a taxi for the beach.
How long to stay: half-day, 1, 2 and 3-day routes
Half-day stop (4-5 hours)
If Klaipėda is a stop between Kaunas and the coastline drive north.
Drop bags at the bus or train station left-luggage. Walk Theatre Square, the Old Town, and the Sculpture Park. Lunch in the Old Town. Take the ferry to Smiltynė for an hour at the beach and a quick Sea Museum walk-by. Return ferry, onward travel by late afternoon. Total: 4-5 hours including lunch.
1 day in Klaipėda (overnight)
The minimum to see the city and the beach properly.
Day 1 morning: train from Vilnius or Kaunas, drop bags. Theatre Square, Old Town walking circuit, Castle Museum. Lunch in the Old Town. Afternoon ferry to Smiltynė: Sea Museum, beach, walk back through the pines. Dinner of smoked fish on the harbour. Day 2 morning: H. Manto coffee crawl, last look at the riverside, onward.
2 days in Klaipėda (recommended)
The right amount for first-time visitors and the only sensible base for one Spit day.
Day 1: arrive by midday, Old Town and Castle Museum, lunch, ferry to Smiltynė, Sea Museum, evening dinner near the harbour. Day 2: full day on the Curonian Spit (Nida, Parnidis Dune, smoked fish at the harbour, Hill of Witches). Return to Klaipėda for the evening. Day 3 morning: H. Manto cafes, optional Sculpture Park, then onward.
3 days deep dive (Spit lovers and beach)
For travellers who want both the city and the dunes without rushing.
Days 1-2 follow the 2-day route. Day 3: drive or bus to Karklė and Olando Kepurė for a wilder mainland beach morning, lunch back in town, optional Blacksmith Museum, last evening at one of the brick-warehouse restaurants. If you have the budget, sleep one night in Nida instead of returning to Klaipėda; it changes the trip.
Local tips
- Buy the Smiltynė ferry ticket at the machine on the dock or use a contactless card on board, exact change is not needed.
- For the Spit day trip, leave Klaipėda early. The 9 a.m. ferry plus 9:30 bus to Nida puts you at Parnidis Dune by 11.
- In summer, also use the New Ferry from the cargo port if the Old Town ferry is queued, it takes cars and has shorter waits.
- H. Manto is fully pedestrian, the parallel Liepų gatvė is where buses run if you need to reach the centre by car.
- Smoked fish is cheaper at the small Smiltynė ferry stalls than at sit-down restaurants. Buy it warm, eat it on a bench by the water.
- Klaipėda Castle Museum is closed Mondays (and Tuesday in low season). Plan museum days for Wed-Sun.
- The Sea Festival weekend (late July) doubles accommodation prices and books out a month ahead.
- If you only have a half-day, prioritise the Old Town and the ferry crossing. The Sea Museum needs at least 2 hours and is best skipped on a tight schedule.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating Klaipėda as a Kaunas or Vilnius. The Old Town is smaller and quieter, but the value is the coast and the Spit. Plan around those, not just the city.
- Trying to see Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit on the same day. It is possible but exhausting and you miss most of the Spit. Either overnight in Klaipėda or stay one night in Nida.
- Driving onto the Curonian Spit in July without booking the New Ferry in advance. Queues for the cargo-port ferry can hit 90 minutes at peak.
- Skipping the Sculpture Park because the name sounds dry. The 116 outdoor sculptures are unusual and the park itself is a great stretch of green.
- Eating only on H. Manto. The street is great for cafes but mid-range food is better in the Old Town and the Memel quarter.
- Renting a car for Klaipėda city. Old Town parking is restricted and the ferry plus public buses cover all the regular sights. Hire a car only if you plan extensive coast or Spit driving.
- Visiting the Sea Museum on a Monday in low season. Confirm hours before arriving; from October to April it has shorter weekday opening.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I spend in Klaipėda?
Two days is the sweet spot: one day for the city, one day for the Curonian Spit. Three days if you also want a wilder mainland beach morning at Karklė or want to slow down. One day overnight is the minimum that does the city justice; a half-day stop only covers the Old Town and a quick ferry ride.
How do I get from Vilnius to Klaipėda?
Train is the most comfortable: about 4 hours direct, twice daily on ltglink.lt. Buses (Lux Express, Ecolines) take 4 hours 30 minutes and run more frequently. Driving takes around 3 hours 30 minutes on the A1. Most travellers take the train; buses are the fallback.
Should I visit Klaipėda or Palanga for the beach?
Different things. Palanga is the resort town: dense beach scene, pier, summer crowds, and family-friendly. Klaipėda is the working seaport with quieter beaches at Smiltynė and Karklė and a real Old Town. If you want the resort experience choose Palanga, if you want the Spit and culture choose Klaipėda.
Do I need to book the Curonian Spit ferry?
For passengers, no, the Old Town ferry runs every 30 minutes year-round and you buy tickets on the spot. For cars in July and August, queues can be long, the New Ferry from the cargo port handles cars more efficiently and offers an online slot reservation in peak season.
When does the Klaipėda Sea Festival happen?
Late July, exact dates change yearly. Programme is published each spring. Tall ships, free outdoor concerts, fireworks on Saturday evening. Book accommodation 2 to 3 months ahead if you want to attend.
Is Klaipėda worth visiting in winter?
Yes if you like quiet coastlines and Lutheran heritage architecture. The Old Town is photogenic in light snow, the Sea Museum has fewer queues, and dinner prices drop 20 to 30%. The Spit is reachable but most Nida cafes close for the season. Bring proper winter clothing, the Baltic wind is sharper than inland.
Can I day-trip to Klaipėda from Vilnius?
Possible but not recommended. Round-trip train is 8 hours, leaving 4 to 5 hours on the ground. You will see the Old Town and the ferry crossing but miss the Spit, the Sea Museum, and any sense of the coast. Overnight at minimum.
