General safety

Lithuania is an EU and NATO member with low crime rates by European standards. Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda are safe for tourists; ordinary urban awareness - keeping an eye on your bag in busy areas, avoiding poorly lit side streets late at night - is enough. Violent crime against visitors is rare.

Transport and getting around

Public transport is reliable, clean and safe. Buses and trolleybuses run on schedule; Bolt and FREENOW work everywhere. Roads are in good condition and traffic rules follow EU standards. Drink-driving limits are strict (0.4‰ general, 0.0‰ for new drivers). Winter tyres are mandatory November to April.

Practical tips

Carry a GHIC/EHIC card or equivalent travel insurance. Emergency number is 112 (English-speaking operators). Tap water is safe to drink in all cities. English is widely spoken under 50, less so in rural areas. Pharmacies (vaistinė) are well stocked and most stay open until 22:00 in city centres.
